Amodei asks the industry to slow down and opens Anthropic to evaluators

Anthropic’s Dario Amodei published an essay called We Must Pace the Frontier on 12 September, arguing that the industry must deliberately slow the rate at which model capabilities improve. "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models," he wrote. Unite.AI is the only outlet here to report what came with it: an announcement on Amodei’s X account that Anthropic is unilaterally committing to give third-party evaluators permanent, employee-level access to its systems.
TechXplore carries the sharpest version of the warning. Amodei said on Saturday that the industry should give safety measures time to catch up, and that without a slowdown AI could within six to twelve months lead a swarm of agents capable of taking over the entire internet. The BBC places the call against growing concern that models may become able to inflict serious damage worldwide.
The response is less settled than any single headline suggests. CNBC reports the industry uniting behind the concerns, with Sam Altman setting out how safety frameworks and a slowdown could work; SiliconANGLE’s headline has both Altman and Elon Musk backing the call, while The Decoder’s has Altman promising rapid progress will continue regardless.
